It therefore occurs to me that this whole problem might well be caused by windows update searching in the background and taking so long. my computer now so much faster and better in use , thanks 🙂 . I then went into windows update off of 'all programs' changed settings to 'check for updates but let me decide to download/install'. I was watching the folder Softwaredistribution to see if it was ticking.. Kb2743187 This lasts between 20 - 30mins after bootup whilst (I presume) Windows finishes scanning the local datastore for currently installed updates and then the SVCHOST.exe process drops back to using just Run WindowsUpdateAgent*.exe 3. Stopping the wuactl service (version 7.6.7600.320) releases the memory.

Restart your computer and then delete the "SoftwareDistribution" folder by following the instructions on Step 1 (only) from Solution 4 above. 4. The final step solved my problem. I would suspect many of you might not even be aware this is happening. I really hope that Microsoft will fix that very soon.

Through process monitoring and live captures, we have narrowed it down to the wuaserv.exe service running inside a svchost.exe process. Was just about to disable windows update service for good, and call it quits, but glad that final step did the trick!
