The normal method is completed wipe the drive and start again, but it is possible to convert without losing data. After a lot of different crap, i downloaded a recovery program. I feel slightly more windows savvy now.

Right click on the disk in the area that says Offline, and select Online The drive will be given a new signature. On the lower part of the Disk Management window, look for a disk which is listed as Offline. I have 2 Seagates and they work fine. Haven't tried it yet but it may also be possible to include the external drive as a device added to a network or homegroup. BUT * When I plugged it in to any of my USB ports, I got this standard message that the device wasn't recognized and it may be defective. * It didn't As a system boots, the BIOS loads that SPECIFIC sector into memory and jumps to it. I should also mention that I can leave the Maxtor connected and Windows will start up perfectly from a complete shutdown. after trying all the solutions in this page yours finaly work!
